Environmentally friendly and reliable district heating produced locally
Elenia Lämpö Oy’s business activities consist of the production, sales and distribution of district heating as well as the maintenance and renewal of the heating network. In addition, a small portion of Elenia Lämpö Oy’s business includes the sale and distribution of natural gas as well as opportunistic generation and sales of electricity in certain market conditions through its combined heat and power plant in Vanaja. Elenia Lämpö Oy operates in more than ten municipalities in the Häme, Central Finland, Northern Ostrobothnia and Heinola regions.
Elenia Lämpö Oy has approximately 5,000 customer contracts and around 85,000 end users. In 2014, its total sales amounted to 1.1 TWh, and its revenue was EUR 74 million. At the end of the year, the company had 90 employees. Finland has around 200 district heating companies, most of which are owned by municipalities. Elenia Lämpö is the second-largest private seller of district heating in Finland.
In terms of volumes, the largest customers consist of municipalities and municipal housing companies, housing companies as well as state, commercial and industrial properties.
Heat from primarily carbon neutral fuels
Centrally produced district heating enables the use of energy-efficient production technology and low emissions. The combined heat and power production saves energy, decreases costs and reduces environmental effects.
In Finland, the production of district heating continues to be largely based on imported fossil fuels which account for more than 50% of all fuels, whereas the share of renewable fuels is approximately 31%.
Elenia has been able to increase the share of renewable wood-based fuels in its district heating production, the share of which was 64% in 2014. The company aims to further increase the share of renewable wood-based fuels.
The share of domestic fuels is growing and the reliability of heating is improving
In 2014, Elenia Lämpö Oy invested in projects that further increase the share of domestic fuels in its district heating production and improve the energy-efficiency of production. Significant investments included the introduction of a solid fuel boiler at the Turenki district heating plant that uses entirely domestic fuels and the installation of a flue gas scrubber at the Toijala solid fuel plant that considerably improves the plant’s efficiency.
Elenia Lämpö Oy also introduced wireless remote monitoring of the wells in its heating network. The system facilitates real time monitoring of the network’s condition as well as proactive maintenance, thereby significantly improving reliability in the supply of heating.
